Chongqing is built vertically and the skyline photos undersell it badly. Hongyadong, the stilt-house district cut into the hillside above the river, is the most-reviewed stop here and worth the night crowds for the moment the whole thing lights up. Luohan Temple sits a short walk from the main squares and is still an active Buddhist site rather than a museum piece. The Chongqing Grand Theatre anchors the arts scene downtown. Attractions dominate the breakdown, well ahead of breakfast spots and bars, so this is a city for sightseeing more than for lingering over meals, and the map plans accordingly.
